In 2007, due to several reasons, Adsense income was going down rapidly. Especially since Google announced that the clickable area in the Adsense ads was going to be reduced, webmasters reported significant losses in their Adsense income. So it is becoming more and more important to know how to optimize the ROI of the clicks on your ads.
I maintain several sites, and on one I decided to try out 2 strategies. One was to exclude the URL of websites that were bidding only 1 or 2 cents a click. The other was to optimize ad type, number of ads and ad placement. Both strategies turned out to be very effective.

New affiliate opportunities at Yahoo!
Until now affiliates had to use a landing page to link to merchants through Yahoo Search Marketing. But in collaboration with Commision Junction Yahoo! has changed its policies to now allow direct affiliate linking to merchants by U.S. publishers. This is GREAT news to all affiliates using ppc with the US version of Yahoo Search Marketing.
To quote on CJ:
We find this policy change exciting on several levels. First, this is a significant shift for YSM and could be a great opportunity for your search marketing campaigns. Second, you heard it here first – YSM has asked us to communicate this change to the affiliate community. Third, the work we’ve done with YSM on this policy change is just another example of our commitment to listening to and speaking up for our publishers.
So, if you’re running search marketing campaigns but have left YSM out of your marketing mix, now is a great time to expand your efforts.

Currently I am watching a wine tasting show at Winelibrary.com. I happened to get there because of a blog entry of Rich Schefren of StrategicProfits.com (check that one out too, he currently runs a video contest with some nice prices). Apart from earning 50 million dollars with building a small wine empire, Gary has discovered the Social Strategy of getting and keeping visitors to his site through delivering authentic and original content. And a lot of these visitors will turn into potential buyers

But what really amazed me was the total professionalism of his sites. Designed and developed by one of the best web designers in the world: Dan Cederholm.
The second thing that amazed me was the really entertaining way of Gary presenting these tastings. You can tell that he’s totally passionate about wines. And apart from being a bit of an ADHD guy, you really have to love him by being such an honest, witty and totally succesful nerd.
Great performance Gary. You earned it and show us all a new way of doing business!

It’s tough to get the attention of your visitors nowadays. People get more and more exposed to advertizing. According to university research:
The average American is exposed to 500 to 1,000 commercial messages a day. That’s anywhere from 182,500 to 365,000 commercial messages that a person will view this year alone.
In the search for new ways to attract the attention of visitors a new cool advertizing gadget has been developed. You may have noticed the slightly curved corner of this homepage. If not: look at the topright corner. It makes the viewer curious of what’s behind that curved corner. It looks kinda magical and users are attracted to click on it. If you’d like to use them on your site, go ahead and visit the Peelaway Ads site. It isn’t free, but only a small cost compared to the revenue you can collect by using this new and cool way of advertizing.

If you are new to Affiliate Marketing, it is easy to get lost in all the possibilities and the thousands of ebooks telling you how to do it (or not). Of all the ebooks I have read, Beating Adwords was one of the few that was written in an honest and practical way. It pointed me the way to my first affiliate marketing succeses. Read the full Beating Adwords review here.

When optimizing your site, it is good to stay ahead of your ‘enemies’. What better way then to take a peek at your competitors’ sites, their traffic, their visitors and their visitors’ behaviour. There are a lot of tools / sites on the internet that can be useful when you want to spy around a bit. Here is my personal top 5 :

On one of my sites I have Google Adsense ads and Amazon ads on the same page. Initially I had 3 Adsense Ads and 1 Amazon Ad. Both Google and Amazon use javascript to deliver the ads and maybe they both use some of the same commands, I don’t know, but lately I noticed something very strange happening: the Google Adsense ads ‘hijacked’ the Amazon ads!

Kontera is around for a while now and I started testing it a month or so ago. This text link advertiser system seemed a nice earner next to the AdSense ads and in the beginning I had high hopes for it. But after a month of testing it there is only one conclusion: with Kontera you are a cheap source of traffic for sites like www.shopping.com and www.deals.com.
They target every cheap keyword with their ads and ‘lure’ traffic to their site to convert them into higher paying clicks. Apparently it works for them, but I won’t display Kontera ads anymore on my sites. Will you?
